what we eat while camping (+ a meal plan!!)

what i eat while camping (+ meal plan!) | camping food is the best food, am i right? there's just something about eating your meal next to a fire surrounded by nature. but without access to a fridge, how do you decide what to cook? this guide will give you 10 grocery essentials to bring on every camping trip and even give you a sample meal plan to follow! click through to check it out!

if we’re being honest, food is the best part of any trip. i’m extremely type a in the sense that i LOVE planning trips, events, etc. (but extremely type b in the sense that my room is always super dirty. sorry mom). my favorite things to plan, however, are the meals i’ll eat while camping. maybe its the challenge of having to cook over a wood fire, or the fact that i also absolutely love grocery shopping, but planning meals is just all around a great time.

before i hit the grocery store, i usually have a mental checklist of the basics i’ll need for a camping trip. these essentials are mostly dry foods that don’t really go bad, like

  • bananas
  • bread
  • peanut butter
  • apples
  • carrots
  • chips
  • granola bars
  • trail mix
  • potatoes

but i also make sure to bring a few cooler essentials, like

  • hummus
  • spinach
  • frozen veggies
  • bell peppers

i always bring these ingredients because they’re easy to store without access to a refrigerator and can be used to mix-and-match different meals! a typical meal plan while camping goes something like:

  • breakfast- banana, peanut butter sandwich
  • snack- apple
  • lunch- hummus and spinach sandwich, granola bar, carrots and hummus
  • snack- trail mix
  • dinner- mixed veggies, chips, more carrots and hummus

but you could also eat the apples with peanut butter as a snack, or the chips with hummus, or make a nice spinach salad with some apple pieces and nuts from the trail mix. you could also channel your inner-food-network-star and get real creative and make a hummus, chip, and carrot sandwich (who else thinks there needs to be a chopped: camping edition??). so while my meals follow pretty much the same pattern, i have enough variety that i can switch up what i have for each meal or snack and still be totally satisfied after i’m done eating. and the best part is, all of these items are super cheap! who doesn’t love saving money while having a great time?

in the video at the top of this post, you can see everything we ate and how we prepared it while we spent 3 days in itasca state park (ps: itasca blog post coming soon!).
